A native of Kajang the “sataytown”, Ken Hor is originally a classically trained pianist and trombonist, and began conducting wind orchestras when he was still in high school. In college, Ken started seriously studying composition, while at the same time working his way up from a studio guy in post production house control room and playing gigs on the side to becoming an engineer, and finally an arranger in various types of productions. From this experience, Ken gained the knowledge and capability to become a versatile hand in both the technical and musical aspects of studio processes. Since 1999 Ken has been writing and producing music professionally for commercial albums, TV and radio ads, films, and sometimes writing concert-hall music.
In 2004, Ken journeyed to California to study Film Scoring at UCLA and worked as a freelanced composer in West Hollywood simultaneously. Ken was also an assistant under composer William Goldstein in his first year in the States. Besides a few commercial albums and jingles in Los Angeles, Ken’s film scores were also heard in several festivals in the States, including UCLA Film Festival, Woods Hole Film Festival, The Asian American International Film Festival, Austin Woman's Film, Music and Literary Festival, and the 2nd Annual Sunscreen Film Festival. With much enthusiasm, Ken returned home in 2008 and put together a new contemporary-ethnic ensemble to perform full-house music showcases called "Let's Go Mamak!" at KLPac. The concert then later bagged 4 BOH Cameronian Awards. Since then, Ken has delivered intense scores for first-rate productions, including an UNICEF documentary "Dance Language" for Shanghai World Expo 2010 and CCTV Channel, indie album “Platform 11 十一号月台”, orchestral project “Young Malaysians Go Classic”, documentary "Immortal Shadow", award-winning director Yeo Joon Han's featured film "In The Dark 怨鬼". Ken is now working on Mad August's latest rock album, and film scores for "7 Dimensi Aliff" - a Malaysian ghost story that's haunting all cinemas early next year. Despite being more a classical trained composer, Ken worked in music production for the first four years after his undergraduate studies at UPM, composing/arranging for jingles (including for Coca-Cola, McDonald's, and Pizza Hut of Malaysia), commercial albums, documentaries, and TV shows, etc. Besides wide variety of commercial genres, he frequently composes world music and ethnic tunes. Ken has collaborated with sought-after percussionist Steve Thornton, renown guitarist Jamie Wilson, the pop legend Sheila Majid and her beloved husband Acis, promising vocalist Chew Paul Way, violin celebrity Joanne Yeoh, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and his youth orchestra, KLPac Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, Orkestra Tradisional Malaysia, Kinta Valley Symphony Orchestra, and a group of top musicians in Malaysia as well as hollywood musicians Ray Pizzi, Kevan Torfeh, Norman Ludwig, Carole Mukogawa, etc. Ken is also a dedicated lecturer giving lectures and workshop at local universities for the past 7 years, focusing on film scoring, jingle production, orchestration, music arrangement and composition. He is currently teaching at UiTM and Ocean Institute of Audio Technology, and has taught UCSI, ICOM, and MIA. Specialties: Ken's work involves a wide range of different compositions. His music is not only limited to score music, like solo instrumental and orchestral music, but also touches upon other types of music like pop a cappella and jazz ensemble. He is also very familiar with world music and electronic sound. Ken's expertise in many genres of music means that he can create music customized to cater any purpose! Ken also conducted most of the film cues that can be heard at kenhor.com. |
